I heard about Irene from an acquaintance. She was not a patient of mine, but her story reflects strategies I use in my clinical practice.

When Irene was in her mid-sixties, she became concerned about her forgetfulness, and how difficult it was for her to remember instructions. Her teenage grandchildren had become so frustrated trying to teach her how to operate her smartphone that they had stopped trying. Irene had retired at 60, after working as an office assistant for 40 years, and hoped that her memory issues were a combination of her age and lack of mental stimulation.
